Officer Sullivan succumbed to injuries sustained twelve years earlier when he was involved in an automobile accident at the intersection of Fillmore Avenue and Paderewski Drive. His partner, Officer Louis Vastola, died one day after the accident.

Officer Sullivan had been with the agency for 15 years and was survived by his wife and three children.
